Life Skills

Intent

Our Life Skills curriculum develops pupils’ independence, safety awareness, communication, confidence, and personal wellbeing across home, school, and community environments. We are a Rights‑Respecting School, and pupils are encouraged to understand their rights and responsibilities as growing members of their community.

From the earliest stages, pupils learn essential skills such as keeping themselves safe, understanding stranger awareness, managing online safety, recognising safe adults, and using kind and appropriate communication with others. In leisure and social contexts, pupils learn to take turns, play cooperatively, interact positively, and regulate their emotions.

The curriculum nurtures personal development through teaching self‑care skills (washing, dressing, friendships, managing feelings), and builds confidence in areas such as money handling, teamwork, problem‑solving, creativity, and simple enterprise. Key skills running throughout all areas are, independence, problem solving, communication, managing emotions, empathy, critical thinking and AI.

Pupils explore their local community, learning how to behave safely near roads, how to interact politely with others, and how to carry out simple real‑world routines such as shopping, travelling safely, recognising signs, and supporting charity.

In the home‑skills strand, pupils learn the foundations of independent living, including chores, organising belongings, preparing basic food, cleaning safely, and managing routines. Across all stages, pupils are supported to become confident, responsible, and increasingly independent young people who can contribute meaningfully to their community.

 Implementation

Life Skills are taught through a combination of discrete lessons, structured routines, and embedded daily practice. Teaching is practical, hands‑on, and multisensory, with high levels of modelling, repetition, and real‑world experiences. Examples include shopping trips, community walks, role‑play cafés, crossing‑the‑road practice, teamwork games, turn‑taking tasks, and home‑skills workshops such as preparing snacks or tidying spaces.

Lessons are individualised and linked to pupils’ EHCP outcomes, communication profiles, and sensory needs. Visual supports such as now/next boards, first–then charts, social stories, sequencing pictures, checklists, and symbols ensure accessibility for all learners of all abilities.

The curriculum follows a clear progression, moving from simple routines and supported play in EYFS/KS1 to guided independence, community participation, money skills, and enterprise in KS3/KS4. Concepts such as personal safety, emotional regulation, teamwork, and problem‑solving are revisited in increasing complexity. Life Skills are reinforced daily across the school day by all staff, with opportunities built into transitions, break times, personal care routines, and classroom interactions.

 Impact

The impact of Life Skills at Grange Academy will to be measured by the pupils’ knowledge and understanding throughout their time at the school and their ability to build on the knowledge they have gained every year. Pupils demonstrate increasing independence, confidence, and safety awareness across familiar and new contexts. They are expected to learn to communicate their needs clearly, make safe choices, manage emotions, participate in shared activities, and complete practical routines both at school and in the community.

Progress is measured through ongoing observation, class journals, pupil voice, and structured assessment frameworks such as small‑step progressions or EHCP review outcomes.

Over time, pupils gain essential functional skills that prepare them for adulthood, further education, employment pathways, or supported living. The ultimate impact is that pupils leave school equipped with the practical, social, and emotional skills needed to live safe, fulfilling, and meaningful lives.
