Animal Care

Intent

In Animal Care the purpose is to introduce pupils to an area of learning that is both a life skill and a potential career. We want them to develop a curiosity of outdoor learning and an empathy and understanding of animals and how to interact with them safely and respectfully. We hope to equip them with the skills and knowledge to care for the animals on a personal level for example their own pets as adults and in the future and the wider environment and as a possible career. We also address many of their EHCP targets through this subject. Pupils are encouraged to work in small groups as independently as possible developing teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills. Working with the animals is also important for the pupils’ own personal well-being and mental health. We also aim to develop their understanding of the provenance of their food and welfare standards in the farming industry.

Implementation

We have a small farm on site with small and medium sized farm animals and we have several different types of small animals around the school in classrooms and communal areas. This gives all pupils the chance to interact with a wide range of animals both familiar and unfamiliar to them. Animal Care is embedded across the school. Pupils in Robins begin with building confidence around recognising the animals and handling them appropriately. This is then developed through Falcons and Eagles to include basic animal care and managing their environment. Kestrels and Red Kites have the opportunity through the school options to follow an Animal Care course which leads to a Skills and Education Group award or certificate qualifications at Entry Levels 2 and 3 and at level 1.  As pupils progress through the school, they work at higher level units, showing more depth of knowledge, understanding and independence. Lessons are taught around units of work, and alternate between practical and theory.

 Impact

Pupils enjoy the practical nature of Animal Care lessons, and it has a positive impact on their well-being. Over time, pupils grow in confidence and are able to perform tasks independently. This is actively encouraged because it builds awareness, empathy for the animals and self-esteem. They are challenged to be able to identify the needs of the animals and use appropriate strategies to complete a task. They also learn to respect the animals and look after them correctly. Pupils will increase their knowledge of where food comes from, and the importance of maintaining high welfare standards for the well-being of the animals and the quality of the food. Where appropriate, pupils will be working towards a qualification at either entry level, 2, entry level 3 or level 1. Completion of this practically led course will increase their chances and prospects in pursuing further education courses or job opportunities and make them aware of their responsibilities should they become pet owners in the future. It is hoped that pupils with a keen interest will continue to study Animal Care at their post 16 placement.
